Ginger Slices to Stimulate Digestion
These ginger slices for digestion are a traditional Ayurvedic digestive remedy used to gently stimulate agni (digestive fire) before meals.
Fresh ginger has warming qualities that help activate the digestive system, making it easier for the body to process food and absorb nutrients.
In Ayurveda, a small slice of ginger with lemon or salt is sometimes taken before eating to awaken digestion and prevent sluggishness after meals.
This simple practice reflects the Ayurvedic principle that strong digestion is the foundation of overall health.
Prep Time:
Serves:
10 minutes
About 2 days if taken before every meal
Ingredients
1 inch of fresh ginger
Juice from 1/2 a lime
Salt to taste
Preparation
Slice the ginger into 1/8 inch slices.
Squeeze the lime juice on top and sprinkle with salt.
Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Don't store more than a couple of days, as this remedy can ferment easily.
Take one slice of this mixture 1/2 hour before meals to stimulate hunger and increase digestive strength.
Use caution with high Pitta/excessive heat.
Dosha Adjustments
Adjustments for Vata
Vata types benefit from sprinkling fresh ginger slices with sea salt and extra fresh lime (or lemon) juice before meals. The combination of salt, sour lime, and warming ginger stimulates digestion.
Adjustments for Pitta
Pitta types should generally use this ritual with caution, using very thin slices of ginger with sweet lime juice and omitting salt. This provides gentle digestive stimulation without overheating the stomach lining.
Adjustments for Kapha
This ritual is exceptional for clearing morning Kapha sluggishness and kindling a slow metabolism. Sprinkling fresh ginger slices with a dash of black pepper and lime juice before meals scrapes away thick dampness.
