Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Warm the Fat: Heat the ghee or oil in a medium heavy-bottomed pot over medium-low heat.

  2. Make the base (Whole Spices): Add the whole cumin seeds, cracked coriander seeds, and black pepper. Sauté gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the seeds release their aroma.

  3. Add Chopped Ginger: Sauté the ginger until golden.

  4. Add Vegetables & Season: Toss in the diced butternut squash, sweet potatoes, carrots (and optional parsnips) along with the salt. Sauté over medium-low heat for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften slightly.

  5. Add Powdered Spices: Reduce the heat to low. Add the ground cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, and nutmeg. Stir continuously for 30 to 60 seconds so the warm ghee and vegetable oils coat the spices and release their aroma without scorching.

  6. Simmer: Pour in 2.5 cups of hot water (or broth). Bring to a gentle boil, then turn the heat to low, cover with a lid, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until the vegetables are fork-tender.

  7. Blend (Optional): Remove from heat. For a smooth, silky evening soup, use an immersion blender (or pour into a upright blender) and purée until smooth. Add up to 1/2 cup extra warm water if you prefer a lighter, thinner soup consistency.

  8. Garnish & Serve: Ladle into two warm bowls. Top with fresh cilantro and serve with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice right before eating to brighten the warm, earthy flavors.

Dosha Adjustments

Adjustments for Vata

Enjoy as written with an extra spoonful of ghee to deeply nourish cold, dry qualities. Ensure root vegetables are cooked until completely soft to support gentle digestion.

Adjustments for Pitta

Reduce or omit the black pepper and pungent spices to keep internal heat calm. Garnish with fresh cilantro or coconut cream to add a cooling finish.

Adjustments for Kapha

Use dry roasting methods with minimal ghee to keep the soup light and clear. Add an extra pinch of ginger or black pepper to awaken slow digestion.
