Sweet Spiced Rice Porridge
This sweet spiced rice porridge is a comforting Ayurvedic breakfast recipe that gently supports digestion and balanced morning energy.
Rice porridge is easy to digest and naturally soothing for the digestive system, especially when prepared warm with digestive spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, or ginger.
In Ayurveda, warm breakfasts help awaken agni and prepare the body for the day ahead.
This nourishing porridge offers a simple and grounding way to begin the morning with warmth and gentle digestive support.
Prep Time:
Serves:
40 minutes
2
Ingredients
1/2 cup basmati rice
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup shredded coconut
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 Tbsp. ghee (or coconut oil) or make your own ghee!
3 medjool dates, chopped
maple syrup to sweeten, if desired
Preparation
In a saucepan, bring the water and milk to boil, then add the rice and shredded coconut. Lower heat to a simmer until the rice is soft and swollen, 30-40 minutes, depending on desired consistency.
In a small skillet, on low heat, heat the ghee and add the ground cinnamon and cardamom. Cook until the aromas of the spices come through, but be careful to avoid burning.
Pour the spice and ghee mixture over the cooked rice porridge and mix. Add the chopped dates and maple syrup (if desired) to sweeten.
If a more warming porridge is desired, use dry or fresh ginger, ground nutmeg and ground black pepper in addition to the cinnamon and cardamom.
Dosha Adjustments
Adjustments for Vata
Vata types benefit from cooking this porridge with an extra spoonful of ghee, warm cinnamon, and extra chopped dates. The soft basmati rice cooked thoroughly in warm milk provides building, grounding comfort for delicate digestion.
Adjustments for Pitta
This porridge is naturally pacifying for Pitta due to its sweet taste and building, cool nature. Cooking basmati rice with whole milk, sweet cardamom, and coconut flakes satisfies a strong morning appetite without provoking internal heat.
Adjustments for Kapha
Kapha types can enjoy this porridge by preparing it with a smaller ratio of rice, cooking it in water, and adding extra cardamom and black pepper. Keeping sweetener minimal (or using honey) prevents heavy, stagnant digestion in the morning.
