Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use apples or other fruits instead of pears?
Yes. Sweet, non-tart apples (like Fuji or Gala) work wonderfully. Cooking apples gently with water, cardamom, and rose water softens their fiber, making them equally easy for the system to digest while providing sweet, grounding nourishment.
Which doshas benefit most from stewed pears?
Stewed pears are especially balancing for Pitta and Vata doshas. The cooling qualities of rose and pear pacify Pitta heat, while the warm, cooked texture and aromatic cardamom soothe Vata's dryness and airiness. Kapha types can also enjoy this dish warm with a small pinch of ginger or extra cardamom.
Is it better to eat stewed fruit warm or chilled?
Eat stewed fruit warm or at room temperature. In Ayurveda, consuming cold or chilled fruit straight from the refrigerator dampens the digestive fire (agni) and can cause gas or sluggish digestion.
When should rose water be added during cooking?
Stir in the rose water after removing the pears from the heat. Adding delicate floral waters during active boiling can cause their volatile aromatic oils to evaporate, reducing both their soothing fragrance and cooling effect on the body.
