About the Recipe

This warm spiced quinoa porridge is a nourishing Ayurvedic breakfast recipe that supports digestion while providing steady morning energy. Quinoa is naturally light yet satisfying, making it an excellent grain alternative for those seeking balanced nourishment. Cooked with warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger, or cardamom, this comforting breakfast helps stimulate agni (digestive fire) and prepare the digestive system for the day ahead. In Ayurveda, beginning the day with a warm, easy-to-digest meal is considered an important step in maintaining digestive balance and overall well-being.

Ingredients

1/2 cup white quinoa

1 1/4 cup water

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon of ghee or make your own with this recipe

1/2 inch fresh chopped ginger

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cardamom

1/8 teaspoon Trikatu or make your own with this recipe

1/4 cup of whole milk (optional)

Preparation

In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil with the salt.

Rinse the quinoa, add to the boiling water

Boil for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a small skillet, saute the ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and Trikatu in the ghee just until the aromas release, being careful not to burn the spices.

Cook the quinoa until the quinoa seeds pop open, then pour the ghee and spices over the quinoa in the saucepan, and stir.

Add additional water if the quinoa becomes dry.

Milk could be added at this point, but is optional. If Kapha is aggravated, avoid using the milk.

Dish into bowls and enjoy with honey, raisins, or a couple of dates.
